FIFA has announced a partnership with Avalanche to develop its own dedicated Layer-1 blockchain. This new platform will serve as the foundation for FIFA Collect, the organization’s digital collectibles and fan engagement strategies, marking a departure from its previous reliance on third-party blockchain networks such as Algorand.

FIFA's journey into the blockchain space began in 2022 with the launch of its NFT platform, FIFA Collect, on the Algorand network. The platform allowed fans to own and trade digital collectibles representing iconic moments from football history. However, FIFA has now decided to migrate FIFA Collect to its proprietary blockchain built on Avalanche's infrastructure.

The migration is scheduled to commence no earlier than May 20, 2025. Post-migration, Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly will no longer be supported. Instead, users will be able to connect to FIFA Collect using Ethereum-compatible wallets such as MetaMask, enhancing accessibility and interoperability within the broader blockchain ecosystem.

Avalanche's platform offers a customizable and scalable solution, making it an ideal choice for FIFA's ambitions. The new FIFA Blockchain will utilize Avalanche's Layer-1 capabilities, providing a robust and efficient environment for hosting digital collectibles and other Web3 applications. This move aligns with FIFA's goal to create a more flexible and user-friendly platform for its growing NFT community.

FIFA's adoption of its own blockchain is part of a broader strategy to enhance fan engagement through innovative technologies. By leveraging Avalanche's infrastructure, FIFA aims to offer fans new ways to interact with the sport, including exclusive digital collectibles, interactive experiences, and potential integrations with gaming platforms.

This initiative follows FIFA's previous ventures into the Web3 space, such as the launch of FIFA Rivals, a blockchain-based mobile game developed in collaboration with Mythical Games. The game allows players to own and trade NFT-collectible player cards, further expanding FIFA's presence in the digital realm.

FIFA's decision to develop its own blockchain signifies a commitment to embracing emerging technologies and creating new avenues for fan interaction. By establishing a proprietary platform, FIFA gains greater control over its digital assets and the ability to innovate without the constraints of external networks.

The move also reflects a growing trend among major organizations to adopt blockchain technology as a means of enhancing user experiences and fostering community engagement. As FIFA continues to explore the possibilities of Web3, fans can anticipate a range of new features and offerings that bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds of football.
