OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has unveiled the company's roadmap for its next-generation AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, aiming to simplify and enhance user experience. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman acknowledged the complexity of OpenAI's current product lineup and expressed a commitment to streamline offerings, stating, "We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence."

The forthcoming GPT-4.5, internally referred to as "Orion," is set to be OpenAI's last model without chain-of-thought reasoning capabilities. This approach aims to improve the model's performance in complex reasoning tasks by generating intermediate steps in its responses.

GPT-5: Unifying AI Capabilities

Following Orion, OpenAI plans to launch GPT-5, a comprehensive system that integrates various technologies, including the previously standalone o3 model. This integration seeks to create a versatile AI capable of handling a wide range of tasks without requiring users to select specific models manually. Altman emphasized this goal, noting the desire to "unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools."

Access and Subscription Tiers

Upon GPT-5's release, OpenAI intends to provide free ChatGPT users with unlimited access at a standard intelligence setting, subject to abuse thresholds. Subscribers to the Plus and Pro tiers will benefit from higher levels of intelligence and additional features, including voice, canvas, search, and deep reasoning capabilities.

Timeline and Future Developments

While specific release dates have not been disclosed, Altman suggested a timeline of "weeks / months" for these developments. This strategic move aims to enhance user experience by reducing complexity and integrating advanced functionalities into a unified AI system. These announcements come amid significant industry events, including Elon Musk's $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI's nonprofit arm, which the board plans to reject.
