A massive power outage swept across Spain, Portugal, and parts of southwestern France on Sunday, triggering widespread blackouts and impacting thousands of residents. (Image Source: Shutterstock)Lisbon, Portugal - The incident began around 12:00 PM local time, with electricity supplies suddenly interrupted in major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Bordeaux. Authorities and power grid operators scrambled to identify the cause, with early reports suggesting a technical fault in the high-voltage transmission network could be to blame.
Spain’s national grid operator, Red Eléctrica, confirmed that an "incident in the European electricity system" triggered the outage, emphasizing that the fault originated outside of Spain’s borders. Portuguese energy company REN also acknowledged disruptions, citing a "disturbance on the European electricity network" as the source of the issue.
In France, electricity provider RTE stated that southwestern regions experienced localized outages but that the overall French power grid remained stable. Emergency teams were rapidly deployed to restore services, and by early evening, power had been largely restored across the affected areas.
While no injuries or major accidents were reported, the blackout caused significant disruptions. Public transport systems, particularly in urban areas, suffered delays. Traffic lights failed, leading to gridlock in some cities, and many businesses were forced to temporarily shut down.
Investigations into the exact cause of the outage are ongoing. Energy authorities across the affected countries are coordinating with European counterparts to understand the broader implications for the continent’s power infrastructure.
