(Pexels/Modified by Block News International)The program, branded “Ma’an,” reflects a growing trend among large regional corporations to step in with practical support for local businesses, particularly as shifting global conditions continue to place pressure on smaller operators.
The initiative provides SMEs with direct, cost-free access to physical retail spaces across Majid Al Futtaim’s portfolio. This includes locations such as Mall of the Emirates, VOX Cinemas, Carrefour outlets, and THAT Concept Store, allowing entrepreneurs to showcase their products in some of the UAE’s most high-traffic commercial environments.
Unlike traditional retail partnerships, which often require upfront investment or revenue-sharing agreements, the Ma’an initiative is structured to remove immediate financial barriers. Participating businesses are given the opportunity to operate pop-up spaces for a limited period, enabling them to test products, reach new audiences, and build brand visibility without the typical costs associated with premium retail locations.
The UAE was founded on the belief that when you create the right conditions, people will build. At the heart of that belief are the homegrown businesses, makers, and entrepreneurs who give our communities their character, energy, and soul. Beyond physical retail, the initiative also extends into the company’s digital ecosystem. Selected SMEs will gain exposure through Majid Al Futtaim’s loyalty platform, SHARE, which connects brands to millions of consumers across its network. This dual approach, combining both physical presence and digital visibility, positions the initiative as more than a short-term marketing opportunity, offering a broader channel for customer acquisition and engagement.
The program is being rolled out in partnership with Dubai SME, an agency operating under Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism that focuses on supporting entrepreneurship and small business development. The collaboration underscores the UAE’s continued emphasis on public-private partnerships as a mechanism for economic resilience and diversification.
In a statement accompanying the launch, the company emphasized the role of local businesses in shaping the country’s economic and cultural identity, noting that “homegrown businesses, makers, and entrepreneurs” are central to the vibrancy of communities across the UAE.
The timing of the initiative is particularly notable. Regional and global economic pressures, including supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions, have created a more challenging environment for SMEs. Smaller businesses, which often operate with tighter margins and limited access to capital, are typically more vulnerable during such periods.
Against this backdrop, the Ma’an initiative appears to be designed not only as a corporate social responsibility effort but also as a strategic investment in the long-term health of the retail ecosystem. By supporting SMEs, Majid Al Futtaim is effectively reinforcing the diversity of offerings within its own malls and retail platforms, which rely on a mix of global brands and local concepts to attract and retain foot traffic.
This is not the first time the company has positioned itself as a facilitator of SME growth. Previous programs, such as its Launchpad accelerator, have focused on integrating startups into its broader commercial ecosystem, providing mentorship, partnerships, and access to infrastructure.
However, Ma’an differs in its immediacy and accessibility. Rather than targeting early-stage startups through structured programs, it opens the door to a wider range of small businesses, including those that may not typically participate in accelerator-style initiatives.
The initiative also reflects a broader shift in how large retail operators are approaching tenant mix and customer experience. As consumer preferences evolve, there is increasing demand for unique, locally driven products and experiences that differentiate malls from traditional retail environments. Supporting SMEs can help meet this demand while fostering a stronger sense of community engagement.
The collaboration with Dubai SME aligns with the UAE’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its entrepreneurial ecosystem. Small and medium-sized enterprises account for a significant portion of the country’s economic activity, and initiatives that improve market access are seen as key to sustaining growth.
Participating businesses benefit beyond immediate sales. Exposure to high footfall locations, access to established customer bases, and association with a major regional brand can deliver a meaningful boost in credibility and brand recognition.
At the same time, the initiative may serve as a testing ground for longer-term partnerships. Businesses that perform well during their participation could potentially transition into more permanent retail arrangements within the Majid Al Futtaim network.
While the program is currently positioned as a limited-time opportunity, its structure suggests potential for expansion or repetition, particularly if it delivers measurable benefits for both SMEs and the company’s retail ecosystem.
